If your spouse receives Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), you may be able to receive Social Security benefits based on their work record, in some situations.

Social Security provides family benefits to certain spouses and children of people who receive retirement or disability benefits.

These spousal and family benefits can provide additional financial support for spouses who have earned less over their working years, including those who have spent time caring for family or have had other responsibilities that affected their ability to work.

Who Can Qualify for Spousal Benefits?

Generally, you may qualify for benefits based on your spouse’s SSDI record if:

You have been married for at least one year, and

Your spouse is receiving Social Security disability benefits, and

You are 62 or older, or you are caring for a child who is under 16 or has a disability and is entitled to benefits on your spouse’s record.

There are some exceptions to the one-year marriage requirement, including certain situations involving a child of the worker.

Your own work history does not necessarily prevent you from receiving a spousal benefit. However, Social Security generally pays your own retirement or disability benefit first. If your spousal benefit is higher, you may receive an additional amount to bring your payment up to the higher benefit.

How Much Could You Receive?

A spouse’s benefit can be up to 50% of the disabled worker’s primary insurance amount, although the actual amount depends on several factors.

For example, if you qualify based on your age, starting benefits before your full retirement age can result in a reduced payment. There are also limits on the total amount that can be paid to a family based on one worker’s record.

Because everyone’s situation is different, it is a good idea to have Social Security calculate what you may be eligible to receive rather than assuming you will receive half of your spouse’s benefit.

How Do You Apply for Spousal Benefits?

Spousal benefits are handled through the Social Security Administration. You can contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or contact your local Social Security office to discuss your eligibility and apply. SSA may ask for documents such as your marriage certificate, birth certificate, and information about your spouse.

If you are unsure whether you qualify, don’t assume you are not eligible. Social Security can review your situation and explain which benefits may be available to you.
